The Benefits of Group Prenatal Care

“I ended up finding a community where I least expected it: at a medical office.”

In a recent article featured on NPR, Jenny Gold describes her experience with a CenteringPregnancy group at Northwestern Medicine. Group prenatal care programs give soon-to-be mothers support throughout their pregnancies and create communities that they can rely on. As Jenny shared in her article, the CenteringPregnancy program offered her the support she needed.

The CenteringPregnancy program, started in 1993 by Sharon Schindler Rising, has been implemented in 600 medical practices throughout the United States. Overseen now by Centering Healthcare Institute, the program offers prenatal support to women through group care models. Pregnant women meet together with a clinician and review topics ranging from labor and delivery to newborn care. Through group care meetings, women find a supportive community; in turn, prenatal group care programs improve mothers’ access to healthcare and better their children’s starts to life.
