Caroline Bersak
Program Officer
Caroline Bersak has nearly two decades of experience working in the nonprofit sector. Most recently, Carrie spent fourteen years as a public interest attorney, including as Director of Legal Services for a multidisciplinary direct-services nonprofit organization in NYC, where she worked with under-resourced families impacted by serious illness or disability. Previously, Carrie was a research assistant on healthcare studies in both hospital and outpatient settings, as well as a Litigation Associate at Day Pitney LLP, where she had the opportunity to work on multiple pro bono cases.
Having spent much of her career providing holistic legal representation focusing on social determinants of health, Carrie has a depth of knowledge about public benefits and income support programs (such as Medicaid, SNAP, Supplemental Security Income, TANF, and Section 8), as well as housing law, family law, disability rights, and advance planning. She has frequently presented on and written about the intersection of legal, social, and health issues.
Carrie is committed to supporting services and program models that promote accessibility, equity, and resilience. With nearly a decade of experience managing multiple public and private grants and overseeing direct services, Carrie is sensitive to the pressures and challenges faced by nonprofit organizations.
Carrie earned Bachelor’s degrees in both Community Health and Public Policy from Brown University and received a Juris Doctor degree from NYU School of Law. Carrie is a licensed attorney admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. She lives in Montclair, New Jersey with her husband and two young children
