The transformative impact of community doulas — and the growing movement to reimagine maternal care — took center stage on NJTV’s Your New Jersey on July 12. The segment featured Vinay Kumar Mysore and Kent Harris of In Good Company design studio, co-creators of the acclaimed exhibition Courage in Care: Community Doulas and the Joyful Revolution of Birth, which debuted at Newark ArtSpace earlier this year.
The immersive exhibit — presented in partnership with the Burke Foundation, NJPAC, and leading maternal health advocates — uses storytelling, photography, and interactive design to honor the essential role doulas play in advancing birth equity. Through powerful narratives and vivid visual displays, Courage in Care invites visitors to explore the lived experiences of doulas and the families they support — from prenatal visits and labor to postpartum care and advocacy.
During the NJTV segment, Mysore and Harris discussed the creative vision behind the project and how it seeks to shift public perception of doulas from “nice-to-have” support to essential health care partners. They also emphasized the importance of centering community voices and lived experience in conversations about maternal health.
The exhibit has drawn hundreds of visitors, including students, healthcare professionals, and policymakers, and has become a powerful platform for dialogue about equitable maternal care. It will remain on view through the end of the summer, with plans underway to bring it to additional cities across New Jersey.
