The Children’s Home Society of New Jersey (CHSofNJ) recently launched AMAR, a community-based doula program in Trenton. AMAR—which means ‘to love’ in Spanish—is the first Spanish-speaking community doula program in the state of New Jersey. The program’s impressive kick-off meeting in early April, which featured remarks from New Jersey’s First Lady Tammy Murphy, was reported on this week in the Spanish-language newspaper Reporte Hispano. Through their community doula program, CHSofNJ aims to improve birth-outcomes for Hispanic mothers and babies in the City of Trenton. The program will train Spanish-speaking women in Trenton to work as doulas, who serve as professionally-trained birth companions, and impart non-medical care to mothers before, during, and after pregnancy.
