NJ Breaks Ground on First-of-Its-Kind Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Center

July 22, 2025 — TRENTON — State and local leaders gathered in Trenton to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Center (MIHIC) — a first-of-its-kind facility designed to advance maternal and infant health through care, research, and workforce training.

The $86.7 million project is the cornerstone of First Lady Tammy Murphy’s Nurture NJ initiative, which aims to eliminate racial disparities and make New Jersey the safest place in the nation to give birth. Located at Pennington Avenue and Warren Street, the center will be operated by the Maternal and Infant Health Authority and serve as a statewide hub for collaboration and innovation.

Three anchor institutions will lead the effort: Rutgers University, overseeing academic research and workforce development; Capital Health, providing comprehensive clinical services and behavioral health care; and the Trenton Health Team, addressing social determinants of health through wraparound supports for families.

The facility will also house the nation’s first Strategic Innovation Center dedicated to maternal and infant health, driving new solutions in digital health, perinatal mental health, doula support, and care equity.

Governor Phil Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy called the groundbreaking a milestone in the state’s maternal health transformation, while Lisa Asare, president and CEO of the Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Authority, described the center as “a true community health hub” that will uplift families and strengthen neighborhoods across New Jersey.
